About Us

photo(5)Hi!

Here’s a bit about us.  (Thus the title of this page:  About Us.  See what we did there?)

Four homeschool families are participating in one way or another as we study

  • Consumer Math,
  • Economics,
  • World Geography,
  • Fitness and Nutrition Science this school year.

Here’s why we’re studying these things in co-op:

  • We want these courses on our high school transcripts.
  • We want to broaden our view of the world before we graduate.
  • We want to improve our fitness and wellness on a personal level.
  • We want to have fun!

We are taking a rather unusual approach to learning in our co-op.  For example, in our Fitness and Nutrition Science study we are using two sets of DVD’s (lectures at a college level) for creating our base of knowledge, but we are creating personal goals and strategies for improving our levels of fitness and wellness, and holding each other accountable in the pursuit of these goals throughout the school year.  In fact, the moms in the co-op (Sabrina, Karen and Kym) have agreed to let the kids act as their personal trainers!  (Is it courage, or is it stupidity???)

We are interweaving our study of Economics with World Geography on the macro level (looking at world systems and how they interact with one another) and with Consumer Math on the micro level (personal financial understanding, strategy, tracking systems, etc.).  We are hoping to make our study of Economics practical and personal as a part of life skills for adulthood.

Our co-op is primarily student-led.  The moms planned the general course for the year, but much of the actual learning comes from the students having discussion on a topic about which they know very little, then going away to find answers to the questions their discussion uncovered.  Each student brings answers back to the next co-op meeting and shares them with their classmates.  Pretty cool, huh?

Oh, by the way…

We’re blogging about it as a part of logging hours for a Technology Credit on our transcripts.  So, feel free to sit in; we’re happy to have you here with us!
